The Stepfather

A thriller film I watched is 'The Stepfather', the following are some of the conventions I noticed in the film:

- Shocking the audience

Like most thrillers, The Stepfather does a great job of shocking the audience, it keeps the characters evil personality discrete until particular moments, then uses editing and mise-en-scene to effectively shock the audience.

- Sound

The use of eerie music to add tension and suspense is also a present convention in the film The Stepfather. An example of this is in the film is when kelly gets shocked by David entering the kitchen, throughout their conversation music that builds tension is played to make the audience believe something bad will take place.

- Opening/Titles

The opening title sequence chosen for the film is Narrative, this means it is part of the overall storyline and the beginning of the film. It depicts to the audience a man changing his image in the bathroom and getting prepared for the day. He is portrayed as an ordinary person until the camera reveals the bodies of dead children in is home.
