RESEARCH: Film Audience

A film audience is usually based on the age, gender, ethnicity and social group of the society. This is based on a stereotype that has been created during the years.
Test screening is a way of being able to create these stereotypes, allowing groups of selected people to view the film before the release and allowing them to provide feedback. From this they also analyse the reaction to the film. This allows the companies to discuss what the target audience for the film should be, and also what age rating they should put on it.

From everything they gather they can produce colour schemes for merchandise and DVD covers to suit the target audience.

The target audience for this film typically known as a 'chick flick' would be teenage girls aged 13-20. Just by looking at the colours of the DVD cover I could be able to make a judgement. This is what the companies would also like to achieve.

As there are a lot of sub-genres of thrillers, I have chosen one to analyse that is similar to one me and my group would like to make. The Sixth Sense is a phsycological thriller.

This is a report for the audience of The Sixth Sense. The majority that voted were males under 18, giving it a rating of 8.5. It was given a PG-13 rating.

Target audiences of thrillers in general are usually males over 18, mainly because of the violence, language or scenes including phsycological issues that may be unsuitable for younger viewers.
In some cases films like the sixth sense gain a lower rating like PG-13 because it may not include so much violence. In this case it is up to the parents or guardian to show it to their children, it is more likely the film works on suspense.

Our target audience will be for an audience of 16+ and likely to be male, as the thriller genre is targeted towards males.
