RESEARCH: Type of film Openings

This is a video clip of the beginning title sequenc of the film 'Pink Panther' the 1963 version.

The main reason why I liked this title sequence so much was because it was different to any other that I had ever seen. This type of title sequence would be a discrete title sequence as it does not give away any parts of the film as well as not really being a part of the film. As you can see above, the whole title sequence is animated, while the film itself is not. It gives us a different perspective to the film and does no give away anything that is going to happen during the movie itself.

The screen shots shown above are from the opening of the movie 'Step Up'. Again, I chose this movie to write abut because I think the opening is quite amusing and it gives us the necessary amount of the story to make the audience want to see the rest of the movie.

The opening to this movie is a narrative. I think it is a narrative as it introduces us to the story the movie is going to be telling throughout, however it does not give away the whole thing The opening makes sense and tells a story in itself which makes us understand the whole movie better. It shows us the two different groups and it makes comparisons between them. So it will show, as seen above, girls dancing ballet then it shows a group of mixed sexs dancing hip hop which is the complete opposite.

Psycho is an Alfred Hitchcock movie that has an opening that is displayed over a black screen. A black screen opening is basically when the titles are displayed over a back screen before the actual film action begins. There is often some non-diegetic sound that is used to give the opening a wider meaning and in some ways try to link it to the film or to try to make the audience feel a certain way.

A Stylized opening is a combination of a discrete opening as well as a narrative opening. As we can see in the screen shots of the film 'The taking of pelham', it introduces us to certain characters, however does not expose who they are and what their role in the story is. A stylized opening will set the scene and use editing to make it quite discrete whilst showing abit of the movie's story.
